National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa – Portici

The National Railway Museum is located in the town of Pietrarsa in Portici, less than 10 km from Naples and can be reached in fifteen minutes by subway from the central station.
The Pietrarsa Museum is hosted where it was built in 1840 the first steel factory for the construction and repair of locomotives in Italy, realized at the behest of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies who was focused on getting supremacy over technological innovations.
Now it is one of the largest exhibition spaces in Italy that collects historic locomotives and carriages belonging to the State Railways (FS).
The place is also historically significant because the first railway line connecting Naples to Portici was built in 1839 in Pietrarsa, We may say that Pietrarsa was the first major contribution to giving life to the current Italian railway system.
In 1989 the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa was inaugurated, exactly where the factory was. After a long renovation it reopened in 2007.
The museum occupies 7 nineteenth-century pavilions, each of them dedicated to a specific category: steam locomotives, diesel and electric littorina, electric carriages, objects and model railways, machinery and equipment for the production of locomotives.
The outdoor space is also interesting, with the statue of Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies, the “Fiorenzuola” platform roof, the water column and a revolving platform.
For groups and schools, the Museum organizes programs from Monday to Wednesday that include guided tours, workshops, animations.

Opening hours: Monday and Tuesday: only for big groups with advanced booking
Wednesday: advance booking required
Thursday: from 2 pm to 8 pm
Friday: from 9 am to 4:30 pm
Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm
