The whole village turns into a nativity scene with life-size characters

In December and early January the small village of Pentema becomes a Nativity Scene set inside the village, among old arches, alleys, rural houses, lobbies, farmyards and still intact “risseu” (cobblestones).

The Nativity Scene in Pentema is the main attraction of this small village and is well-known throughout the Genoese area and far beyond.

Pentema (a district of Torriglia) is a small peculiar and very well-preserved village in the Ligurian backcountry. It is jokingly considered the wild Cinderella of the territory because it is isolated in the mountains and far away from the city.

Since 1994, during the Christmas time, Pentema livens up and travel through time. All its streets and houses are populated with life-size figures to recreate an extraordinary nativity scene, in which are represented all uses, customs, settings and ancient crafts of the late nineteenth century, the period of maximum expansion of the village.

In this unique setting, visitors are immersed in a setting that reconstructs how people used to live in the Ligurian backcountry at that time, with their hard and simple lifestyle. At the end of the path, the nativity scene isalso recreated in a typical Ligurian mountain stable.

The nativity scene is reconstructed with enthusiasm by a large number of volunteers who animate the village every year in October, November and December. All the scenes are assembled and then disassembled and kept in the deposits during the months of closure. Local artists bring the mannequins to life, reconstructing in clay the faces of people who lived in the village. The furniture and objects are the result of donations and research in the homes of the Pentemins.

In addition, in 2010 the “Ca ‘da Sitta” House Museum was inaugurated, a rural house that has remained intact since the 1940s, which has been turned into a small museum of peasant life and can be visited all year long.

The Pentemina Valley, a beautiful enclave between the Antola park and the Pentemina river, is ideal for visitors to discover on foot, horseback, or mountain bike. Ancient mule tracks between Val Trebbia, Valle Scrivia, and Valbrevenna reach Mount Antola and continue towards Val Borbera and beyond.
