Olive tree and Oil Museum – Torgiano

In an ancient olive oil mill within the medieval walls of the castle

The Olive tree and Oil Museum (MOO) is located in an ancient olive oil mill in the small medieval village around the castle of Torgiano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, in the province of Perugia.

The museum contains ethnographic, artistic and archaeological collections dedicated to the world of oil. Thus the visitors can discover the secrets of olive cultivation and oil production, including not-so-known old traditions.

The exhibition is developed in 10 rooms. It starts by informing about the botanical characteristics of the olive tree, on the most common cultivars in Umbria, and by traditional and new techniques of cultivation and oil extraction.

The oil machines’ evolution is also explained: from the first stone mortars, dating back to the fifth millennium BC, to the introduction of the trapetum, the large mill used and spread by the Romans, up to the ones using animal traction and to the invention of the “continuous cycle” system.

After it, the following rooms concern
– the mythological origin of the plant,
– the use of oil for lighting and heating
– its use in the religions’ rituals, in medicine and nutrition, in sports, in cosmetics,
– and much more…

It is an interesting journey to discover one of the typical products of Mediterranean culture.
