Good Friday Procession – Chieti
April 18th, 2025. One of the oldest Easter traditions in Italy.
The Good Friday Procession in Chieti – this year on April 18th, 2025 – dates back to the year 842, and competes with the procession in Orte for the title of the oldest Good Friday procession in Italy.
The procession starts, as usual, at 7.00 pm from the Cathedral of San Giustino, and crosses the town’s streets with statues and seven “trophies”, the wooden sculptures representing the different phases of the passion of Christ.
The brothers of the twelve brotherhoods of the city participate in the procession, wearing small capes in different colors and hoods. They bear the symbols of the Passion, including the coffin of Christ followed by the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows.
For the occasion, the historic center is illuminated by torches and candles.
The procession is accompanied by the Miserere, sung by 160 choristers and composed in 1740 by Saverio Selecchy, chapel master of the cathedral.
