Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival – Avella
11-13 and 18-20 October 2024. Traditional food and products from Irpinia and Campania
On October 11-12-13 and 18-19-20, 2024, Avella, in the Province of Avellino, hosts the Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival reaching its 11th edition.
The Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival celebrates Avella’s long-standing agricultural tradition, whose main protagonist has always been the hazelnut, as its name can attest. In Spanish, in Portuguese, and Occitan, ‘hazelnut’ is called respectively ‘avellana’, ‘avelã’, and ‘avelana’ , while in Latin ‘nux abellana’ means ‘hazel’.
At the Festival, crafts markets, exhibitions and tastings of many further traditional products from Irpinia and Campania, such as chestnuts, mushrooms, DOP olive oil.
Moreover, in Piazza Municipio, tastings of excellent wines and craft beers, as well as local dishes: anchovy and nuts linguine, porcini mushrooms penne, wild boar ragu pasta, sausage and friarielli sandwich, beans, and cotechino, roasted chestnuts, hazelnut and chestnut desserts, nuts, raw and toasted hazelnuts.
Visitors may also see the town historic sites: the Roman Tombs and Amphitheatre, the Norman Castle, Palazzo Ducale, Kiosk of the Friars Minor Convent, Immersive and Archaeological Museum
The festival is organized by the cultural association “I Rami del Melo”
