The Night of Lights. Santa Domenica Feast – Scorrano

July 5-6, 2024. A fairy-tale atmosphere in honor of Santa Domenica.

On July 5 and 6th, in Scorrano, 35 km from Lecce, is taking place every year the Feast of Santa Domenica, the patron saint of the town.

The feast is also called the Night of Lights (Notte delle Luci) due to the scenographic light installations turned on the evening of the 5th and the huge procession of  the 6th

According to the legend, Santa Domenica appeared around the year 1600 in an old lady’s dream to announce that she would become the patron saint of Scorrano. As a sign of protection, she said that she was going to free the town from a terrible plague epidemic. To spread the voice of this miracle, the sick, once cured, should have lit oil lamps and put them by the windows. In a short time, the plague was eradicated.

In memory of the miracle, the citizens of Scorrano turn the lights on to thank Santa Domenica.

Over the years the Night of Lights has become more and more popular and it is now one of the main events in the Apulian Summer.

Every year thousands of visitors come to Scorrano to admire the wonderful light installations made by maestri dell’arte delle parature  for the occasion. The huge structures are covered by thousands of colored light bulbs and often reproduce some of the most famous monuments in the world, such as the Colosseum, the Tower Bridge or the Eiffel Tower.
A unique event that has earned Scorrano the title of World Capital of Illuminations.
