Orvieto Underground – Orvieto
Journey to discover the underground of the millenary city of Orvieto
The undergrounds of Orvieto are a labyrinth divided into over 1200 caves, tunnels, wells, and cisterns built by the ancient inhabitants of the millenary city in about 2500 years.
A guided tour allows visitors to discover the labyrinth through a path in the heart of “Orvieto Underground” where the cavities overlap and intersect under the modern urban fabric and where exciting traces of Etruscan and medieval antiquity are still visible.
The route is a journey through history where visitors can see the wells dug by the Etruscans, the butti (small medieval wells), the remains of an ancient mill with millstones, press, hearth, feeders for the animals assigned to the millstones, the ” colombai ” for the breeding of pigeons… up until the contemporary era when these underground areas were used as a refuge during the Second World War.
But it is also a geological experience to discover the evolution of the various cliff phases,
